BROOKLYN, N.Y.— Senior Frank Cerillo of the LIU Brooklyn baseball team was named 2018-19 Northeast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Cerillo became the first LIU Brooklyn student-athlete to receive the NEC Scholar Athlete of the Year honor.
In its 13th year, the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which is sponsored by the league's Faculty Athletic Representatives, goes to the male and female student-athletes who have exhausted their athletic eligibility, graduated and compiled the highest grade point average in the Conference at the conclusion of the academic calendar.
"What a magnificent achievement by these seven men and women," said NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris. "It takes a great deal of ability and commitment to attain a 4.0 GPA while also meeting the demands of Division I athletics. These scholar-athletes are extremely deserving of this recognition."
Cerillo posted a 4.0 grade point average in his tenure in downtown Brooklyn and was named LIU Brooklyn's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this spring. He is a two-time member of the NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll. The right-hander was a member of bullpen in his two seasons at LIU and was a part of the 13-member senior class that earned the 2018 NEC Championship. This season, Cerillo registered a 1.50 earned run average, logging six scoreless appearances and averaging 1.00 strikeout per inning pitched.
