Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team defeated NJIT, 1-0, on Wednesday evening at LIU Field. After a scoreless first half, redshirt freshman Romario Guscott scored the lone goal of the game, giving the Blackbirds their third victory of the season.
Early in the first half, freshman Filip Nordstrom had the first scoring opportunity of the match in the 4th minute that went wide. In the 19th minute, the Highlanders' Joshua Mercer got a shot off that was blocked by a strong LIU defense.
In the 39th minute, senior captain Tanner Sica took the last shot for the Blackbirds from distance in the first half that missed just high. The score would remain 0-0 going into the second half.
In the 66th minute, redshirt sophomore Naeem Charles put Nordstrom in down the right side. Nordstrom made a move and got a cross off to Guscott, who finished with a header to give LIU Brooklyn a 1-0 cushion.
Redshirt junior Logan Keys made two impressive saves to keep the home team in front. The first was a shot from outside the box that was knocked away, and the second save took place when NJIT flicked a header on goal but the shot was intercepted by Keys to maintain the Blackbirds' 1-0 lead.
Senior Nahuel Medina came close to scoring for LIU in the 86th minute, when freshman Rasmus Hansen got a pass to Medina for a shot from inside the box, but the shot glanced off the post and went wide. The Blackbirds would hold off NJIT over the final few minutes to move to 3-5-2 on the season heading into conference play.

The Blackbirds will face off against Fairleigh Dickinson on the road at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 in their first conference game of the season. The team returns to Brooklyn on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1:00 p.m. to host Bryant at LIU Field.
