LINCROFT, N.J. – The LIU Brooklyn women's cross country team competed at the Monmouth XC Kick-Off Saturday morning. The Blackbirds traveled to Lincroft, N.J. to compete against five teams in a short 4K at Thompson Park.
The Blackbirds were lead by freshmen Shayla Wigand who crossed the line at 15:10.34, averaging a 6:06.3 mile. The Dublin, Ohio native, finished in sixth place in the 77-competitor field.
Sophomore Esther Jean-Louis, last year's top returner for the Blackbirds, finished 10th in the competition with a finish time of 15:17.44, averaging a mile time of 6:09.2.
Wigand and Jean-Louis made LIU the only team, other than Monmouth, to have more than one runner finish in the top 10.
Blackbirds sophomores Kharyn Ethridge, Adjovi Simpini, and Nerene Aberdeen, crossed the line at 16:07.53, 16:22.93, and 18:32.84, respectively.
Alison Doway led the squad for the upperclassmen, finishing with a time of 17:00.57. Rounding out the competitors were junior, Anghie Hall who crossed the line at 20:32.02 and senior Niteesa Brooks who finished right behind Hall at 20:36.77.
The Blackbirds finished fourth in the team race, accumulating 98 points. Monmouth won title with 19 points, followed by Lafayette and Seton Hall. Wagner and St. Francis (N.Y.) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
LIU will be back in action at the Nassaney Cross Country Pre-Conference Meet, in Smithfield, R.I. on Sept. 12th.
