MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team will look to continue its recent success in Northeast Conference play with a pair of key road matchups this weekend with teams from Pennsylvania. The Blackbirds will tangle with Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 14, beginning at 3:00 p.m., before concluding the road trip with a rematch of last season's NEC Tournament title match against Saint Francis U. on Sunday, Oct. 16.
LIU recently put together a 1-0-1 weekend to kickoff NEC play last week, tying Bryant on the road before coming back to LIU Field for a 7-2 drubbing of Central Connecticut. The Blackbirds scored six times in a span of 18 minutes and 20 seconds during the first half to erase a 1-0 deficit and pull away for a convincing win.
All-America candidate Simen Hestnes scored two goals and added two assists in the game, and now has six goals and seven assists to total 19 points, which is tied for 15th place nationally. His seven assists tie him with fellow sophomore and All-America candidate Rasmus Hansen, and the total places both in a tie for sixth amongst all NCAA Division I players.
Hansen ranks second on the team with 17 points (5G, 7A), while junior Naeem Charles, who also tallied two goals against the Blue Devils, is just behind him with 16 points (6G, 4A). Sophomore Romario Guscott is the fourth player to have double-digit points this season with five goals and four assists.
The Colonials tied their NEC opener against Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-1, on Oct. 7, and stand at 3-5-2 on the season overall. Rafael Bruzual is the top goal scorer on the squad with three, while Keane McIvor, who was a Second Team All-NEC selection last season, has a team-best four assists.
With a league-high eight victories this season, the Red Flash of Saint Francis U. will take on St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday before tangling with the Blackbirds two days later. SFU has won three of its last four outings, all of which have come by way of shutout, including a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart in the NEC opener last Sunday. All-American Francis de Vries paces the defense for the Red Flash, and is looking to add to his hardware this year after being named NEC Defender of the Year in 2015. Jack Webber leads the team with three goals and seven points.
