BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU men's soccer team (8-4-2, 2-1-1 Northeast Conference) will look to bounce back from its first Northeast Conference loss in two years this weekend, welcoming Sacred Heart to LIU Field, Friday, October 21 at 4 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blackbirds split last weekend, beating Robert Morris 3-1 Saturday, before falling in a rematch of last season's championship game to Saint Francis U., 3-0. The loss to the Red Flash snapped a 12-match unbeaten streak that LIU had accumulated in conference play.
Against Robert Morris, sophomore Rasmus Hansen scored a pair of goals and junior Naeem Charles netted the game-winner in the second half of LIU Brooklyn's 3-1 victory.
LEADING LIU
The Blackbirds have one of the best offensive squads in the nation presently. As a team, LIU is first in the conference and fourth in the nation in assists per game, scoring offense, total assists, total goals and total points. The quadrant of Simen Hestnes, Rasmus Hansen, Naeem Charles and Romario Guscott dominate the NEC standings in nearly every offensive statistical category. All four are ranked in the top five in the league in assists per game, goals per game, points per game, total assists, total goals and total points. Hestnes is also ranked fourth in the nation in assists per game. Hansen, after Saturday's efforts, currently leads LIU, with seven goals and seven assists, for 21 total points. Hestnes is right behind him with 20 points, including six goals and eight assists so far this season.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Sacred Heart enters Friday's match still in search of its first NEC win. The Pioneers are 2-8-2 overall, and 0-3 in NEC action. In conference play, SHU suffered a 2-0 loss to St. Francis Brooklyn, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of SFU, and most recently, fell 2-1 to CCSU in overtime. The Pioneers are led by senior forward Shaquille Saunchez, who has six goals so far this season.
UP NEXT
The Blackbirds will host their final regular season home game of the year, Friday, October 28 against Fairleigh Dickinson. Prior to the match, slated to begin at 5 p.m., LIU will honor its graduating senior class of Dennis Amvrosiatos,Ryan Herold, Logan Keys and Stephen Mensah.
