BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn men's soccer standouts Romario Guscott and Giuseppe Barone were named the Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league on Monday. The duo played a large role in the Blackbirds' overtime victory over NJIT last week.
Barone, who earned his second Rookie of the Week honor this season, opened the scoring for LIU against the Highlanders with his second goal of the season that put the score at 1-0 in the 20th minute. The Brooklyn native currently leads all NEC freshmen in assists (three) and points (seven).
After NJIT tied the score and forced overtime, Guscott came up big with the game winner in the 94th minute to propel the Blackbirds to their sixth non-league win of the season. LIU Brooklyn put together a 6-3-1 non-conference record, the top mark for a single season against foes outside the NEC since 1992 (7-3).
LIU Brooklyn will begin its quest to defend its NEC regular-season crown on Friday, Oct. 7 at Bryant. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
