ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. - The LIU Brooklyn bowling team capped a three-day weekend at the Fairleigh Dickinson Jamboree by winning the event Sunday afternoon. LIU beat Howard, No. 6 Sam Houston State and No. 14 Sacred Heart to finish the weekend with a 9-3 record, and first place out of 27 teams.
The No. 13 Blackbirds opened the day winning a total of five game baker match against Howard to enter the top half of the bracket. LIU beat the Bison 1,001-845. Once in the bracket, the Blackbirds took on the No. 6 nationally-ranked Sam Houston State, in a best of seven Baker match. There, LIU took the win from the Bearkats, 4.5-1.5, to advance to the championship match. Sacred Heart took on previously-undefeated Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the bracket, beating the host Knights 4-2, to advance.
In the championship match, a rematch of last year's Northeast Conference championship, LIU won the first two games, 186-165 and 183-168, jumping out to a 2-0 lead over the Pioneers. Sacred Heart would come back to win the next two 168-163 and 211-197, knotting the score up, 2-2. But the Blackbirds came out with a big finish, beating SHU 205-192 and 198-191 in the final two games, to take the championship, 4-2.
The Blackbirds finished the weekend with 10,456 total pins in 55 games, for a 190.1 pin average per game.
