BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The LIU Brooklyn women's track and field team opens its indoor season Friday, December 2, at the Metro Holiday Season Opener in Staten Island, N.Y.
The Blackbirds are looking to build off their second-place finish in the 2016 NEC Indoor Championships.
LIU Brooklyn returns senior Cassandra Jones, who was named the Most Outstanding Women's Sprinter at last season's conference championship. The North York, Ontario product placed first in the 500-meter dash breaking the tape in 1:14:18. She also finished third in the 200 m (24.64) and fourth in the 60m (7.80).
Sophomore Shantae McDonald comes into the indoor season after a strong outdoor campaign. She finished second in the 100m hurdles clocking a 13.99 and fourth in the 100m crossing the line in 12.22 at the conference championship meet.
The Blackbirds, who lost some key members on last season's team, have six freshmen this season. Angeli Andre and Taylor Parker have stood out to coach Simon Hodnett.
Up next, the team will compete in the 6th annual St. John's Bill Ward Meet in South Huntington, N.Y next Thursday, December 8. The 2017 Northeast Conference Indoor Championship is scheduled for Friday, February 17, and Saturday, February 18, at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
