WEST POINT, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team competed in their first match in the states since February 21, facing Army West Point on Thursday afternoon. The Blackbirds dropped a 5-0 decision to the non-conference member to begin a busy weekend.
LIU's last three matches occurred in Puerto Rico over the team's spring break trip. The team continued it's outdoor play this spring at Army on Thursday, who came into the contest on a six-game win streak. The Black Knights boost their record to 14-3 this spring with the win. The Blackbirds drop to 0-9.
A clinch style of play left the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots unfinished.
Two freshmen battled at the No. 3 singles spot, but Blackbird Malin Leysen fell to Kirby Einck, who extended her winning streak in singles to nine straight with the 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Rianne van Son and and Meriam Rhallab both put up a fight in the No. 4 and 5 singles spot, respectively. But in the end, both freshmen fell 6-2, 6-3.
Earning a win for the Blackbirds and beginning doubles action on high note was LIU's pair of Anna Grigoryan and Caroline Koenigsfeldt. The duo defeated Army's Eva Sung and Rugile Valuniate, 6-2.
Despite strong play at the No. 2 (Isabella Wagener and Malin Leysen) and No. 3 doubles (Rianne van Son and and Meriam Rhallab), and a tought battle for the doubles point, the LIU pairs could not withstand the Black Knights.
"It's the best we've played all season," head coach Rose Ketmayura said. "The best yet, and I am super proud of their improvement."
Up Next: The Blackbirds will have a busy weekend ahead, beginning Northeast Conference play on Friday, March 25. LIU will head to Sacred Heart for a 1:00pm matchup on Friday, and host St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, March 26 at the USTA Center.
