FLUSHING, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season against St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. The Blackbirds trumped the Terriers, 7-0, to begin LIU's league play.
In the victory, the Blackbirds swept the entire lineup, not dropping a single set to the Terriers.
In doubles, LIU's Anna Grigoryan and Caroline Koenigsfeldt earned a win in the No. 1 spot, by a 6-1 margin over the St. Francis Brooklyn pair. While Malin Leysen and Isabella Wagener continued the trend at the No. 2 spot, shutting out the Terriers duo, 6-0.
The domination continued through singles action, tallying set wins straight down the lineup.
In the No. 1 spot Grigoryan posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over St. Francis Brooklyn's Vanja Savic. Koenigsfeldt and Leysen swept their competition, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 2 and 3 spot, respectively. While Rianne van Son downed Terrier Rebecca Mares in the No. 4 spot, 6-1 6-1. And Wagener added on one last sweep to conclude play in Flushing, defeating Maery Fornolles, 6-0, 6-0.
LIU will look to continue its NEC success when they travel to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart on Tuesday, March 29. The match between the Blackbirds and the Pioneers is set for 1:00pm.
