BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU's Brooklyn women's lacrosse team will head to Iona for one final non-conference matchup this season, before Notheast Conference competition begins. The Blackbirds and Gaels are set to face off on Satuday, April 2, with a first draw set for 2:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE BLACKBIRDS
This week LIU boosted its record to 4-5 on the season, after cruising to a win over Delaware State, 18-4. The Blackbirds will look to keep the offense going at Iona, after tallying 14 goals in the first half against the Hornets.
Leading the offense this past week was junior Mary McQueen. The junior posted five goals in the win, boosting her goal total to 25 on the season.
Co-captain Jenn Peters also registered five points in the win, and now tallies a season total of 37 (32g, 5a), the most on the squad. The junior scored four times, and earned an assist on sophomore Mackenzie Rolland's first goal of the season.
Carlie Robinson was the third Blackbird to earn at least a hat trick, tallying four goals and an assist against the Hornets. The sophomore would find the back of the net three straight times in the Blackbirds 11-0 run over DSU in the first half. Earning Robinson a hat trick in under two minutes.
Freshman Virginia Gibbons earned the start, and the win for the Blackbirds against Delaware State. Gibbons played the first half of the game, and made four saves while in between the pipes. Senior Alexis Maldonado came in at goal after the half, and has now played in all nine games this season.
SCOUTING THE GAELS
Metro Atlantic Athletic Coference (MAAC) member Iona, is no stranger to Northeast Conference competition this 2016 season. The Gaels have faced NEC members, Wagner, Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut so far this season, picking up wins against all three programs.
The Gaels, also 4-5, look to bounce back from a 18-10 conference loss at Marist last weekened. The team's leading goal scorer, junior Erin Pugh, put up her third consecutive three goal performance, while also contributing to the offense by dishing out two assists.
Mary Kate McCormick, Katelyn Noschese and Jenna Tolzmann each chipped in two goals apiece. McCormick, a senior, leads the Gaels roster in points (14g, 27a).

LIU will take a western Pennsylvania trip to kick off league play. The Blackbirds will face Robert Morris on Friday, April 8 at 3:00 p.m., and then follow-up with a game at Saint Francis U. on Sunday, April 10 at 12:00 p.m.
