BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team will return home for a pair of Northeast Conference matchups thsi weekend. The Blackbirds will host Mount St. Mary's on Friday, April 15 and Wagner on Sunday, April 17.
ABOUT THE BLACKBIRDS
After a three-game road trip, LIU will compete on its home turf for the first time since March. The team will look to get back on track in league play, after suffering a pair of losses in western Pennsylvania last weekend.
Kicking off NEC play, the Blackbirds faced Robert Morris last Friday.
Junior Mary McQueen led the offensive attack for LIU against the Colonials, registering four goals in 60 minutes. Classmate Jenn Peters also tallied a pair of goals for LIU in the matchup.
Freshman Virginia Gibbons put a solid effort in between the pipes, posting 12 saves on RMU's 25 shots on goal.
On Sunday, the captain trio of Peters, McQueen and Tori Shinkowitz each tallied hat tricks, but the team fell to Saint Francis U., 13-10. Peters and McQueen lead the squad in points with 46 (40g, 6a), 35 (33g, 2a), respectively.
Gibbons also earned the start against the Red Flash, but picked up the loss after posting three saves on seven goals against, in her 29:15 played. Senior Alexis Maldonado came in relief and tallied two saves of her own, on six goals against.
The Blackbirds are now 0-2 in NEC competition, and 4-8 overall.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: MOUNTAINEERS
Also beginning league play last weekend was Mount St. Mary's (3-9). The Mountaineers split their matchups with Bryant and Central Connecticut, defeating the Blue Devils but falling to the Bulldogs.
Earning a hat trick in their victory over the Blue Devils was Molly Morris. The senior also leads the team with 34 points (22g, 12a) this season. Sophomore Nicole Lantuh paces right behind Morris this season with 31 points (24g, 7a).
Senior netminder Steph Rurkowski has seen action in all 12 games, and maintains a 11.48 GAA.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: SEAHAWKS
Wagner (3-8) also went 1-1 during its NEC opening weekend, a week ago. The Seahawks will play Sacred Heart on Friday before heading to Brooklyn to face the Blackbirds on Sunday.
Seniors Gretchen Fay, Kimmy Tumolo and Taylor Pastore, each tallied a hat trick apiece in the convincing 15-4 win over the Blue Devils.
Classmate and midfielder Shea Gegan was named NEC Defensive Player of the Week after forcing a career-high 11 caused turnovers in Wagner's win over CCSU. Gegan's 11 caused turnovers is the NCAA Division I single-game record this season, and an overall school record.
On Sunday, the Seahawks took part in a low-scoring, defensive battle, after falling to Bryant, 7-4 in Staten Island. The Bulldogs remained perfect in the NEC after the matchup, while the Seahawks dropped to 1-1 in conference.

The Blackbirds will compete solely in Fairfield, Conn. next weekend and face Sacred Heart. The Northeast Conference battle will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22.
