BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team will head to Fairfield, Conn. to take on NEC foe, Sacred Heart on Friday April, 22. The first draw between the Blackbirds and Pioneers will take place at 3:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE BLACKBIRDS
LIU will play its final road contest of the regular season, this coming after a busy weekend on LIU Field last week. The Blackbirds suffered a pair of conference losses after facing Mount St. Mary's and Wagner in the birdcage.
LIU's would suffer a heartbreaking 15-14 OT-loss after a furious comeback against Mount St. Mary's on Friday. The team would put up a fight, but it was the Mountaineers who put up a goal first in sudden-death overtime.
It was a total team effort by the Blackbirds, who had seven different members of the squad find the back of the net during the contest against the Mountaineers.
Five Blackbirds would score in the team's 15-9 loss against the Seahawks, including Christina Zolezzi who would put up her first goal of the season.
Jenn Peters led the scoring efforts for the Blackbirds in each contest, tallying four goals against Wagner, and three versus Mount St. Mary's. This is the third game in a row that the junior has recorded at least a hat trick. The junior's 47 total goals this season is now tied for eighth in the NCAA and leads the conference.
Virginia Gibbons earned the start in between the pipes for the Blackbirds in each matchup. The freshman stopped 11 of the Mountaineers' 15 shots-faced, and posted three save in the matchup against the Seahawks. Gibbons' currently maintains a .436 save percentage.
Heading into the final stretch of NEC competition, the Blackbirds lead the league in goals per game with 12.29, and are currently 4-10 overall, and 0-4 in conference play.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: PIONEERS
Sacred Heart faced the same two teams last week: Mount St. Mary's and Wagner last weekend.
The Pioneers defeated the Mountaineers 9-8, in a comeback win after trailing 8-5 in the second half. Sacred Heart dropped their matchup against Wagner, 8-6, and had six different scorers in the contest.
Jesslyn Joseph led all players with four goals, recording her 100th career point on her Senior Day against the Mount. Joseph also ranks second on the team in goals.
Junior Caitlin Delaney leads the current Sacred Heart roster with 44 points (29g, 15a).
The Pioneers sit at 6-6 overall, and split have split 2-2 in NEC play.
