BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The LIU Brooklyn baseball team dropped its final game of the 2016 season to Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon, 11-4. With the loss, the Blackbirds finish the year with an overall record of 19-35, and 13-17 in the Northeast Conference.
Sacred Heart got on the board early Sunday, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first on two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly. LIU got on the board in the top of the second, on sophomore
Andrew Turner's solo home run to left field to make it 3-1.
An RBI triple in the bottom of the second widened SHU's lead to 4-1, but LIU would re-close the gap in the next frame, when junior
Charles Misiano scored from third when the Pioneer's catcher caught a runner stealing.
SHU continued to add to the lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the third, and two in the bottom of the fourth, to go up, 7-2. Senior
Tommy Jakubowski had an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to make it 7-3, but a big inning for SHU in the seventh widened the gap even further. The Pioneers would use four hits and a walk to score four runs, taking the lead 11-3. Senior
Nate Struss brought in LIU's fourth and final run of the game in the top of the ninth to make it 11-4, when he reached on an RBI fielder's choice.
The Blackbirds conclude the 2016 season with a 19-35 overall record, and 13-17 in the Northeast Conference.
