BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn's Anna Grigoryan was named Northeast Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Year, it was announced by the league on Wednesday. The accolade comes after an impressive rookie campaign by the freshman.
Honored as part of the All-Conference Rookie team as well, Grigoryan established herself in No. 1 singles throughout the year, leading the Blackbirds in tough matches by tallying multiple notable wins in the spot.
The Moscow, Russia product posted a 3-1 record during league play, with her only setback coming in a three-set marathon to SHU senior Katie DeRienzo.
Grigoryan finished the year with her best play, on three-match win streak, and was named the NEC Player and Rookie of the Week on April 5. The rookie also posted straight set wins against opponents from Seton Hall and Bryant, and split sets against Yale in an unfinished match.
In doubles play, Grigoryan along with Caroline Koenigsfeldt posted an undefeated mark in conference competition, going 4-0 at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Grigoryan continues the long line of No. 1 flight stars that LIU Brooklyn has produced. The rookie was the fourth LIU player to earn recent NEC Rookie of the Year honors, joining Merve Koksal (2004), Ashley Harvey (2006) and Sanne Louwers (2012).
