NSCAA Regional Rankings
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Buoyed by a pair of impressive wins at home over the weekend, the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team rose in the National Soccer Coaches Association Northeast Region Rankings that were announced on Tuesday. The Blackbirds jumped from ninth in the region to sixth by virtue of their victories at LIU Field.
On Friday, LIU earned its first victory over a nationally-ranked team since 1989 with a 2-1 win over No. 22 Rider. The Broncs entered the contest as the top-ranked team in the Northeast region and the Blackbirds were able to score the one-goal win thanks to goals from sophomores Romario Guscott and Simen Hestnes.
Two days later, LIU Brooklyn defeated local opponent Manhattan, 4-1, as four different players found the back of the net. Hestnes, who was named NEC Player of the Week on Monday, had a goal and two assists, while Guscott, sophomore Rasmus Hansen and classmate Erik Wahlin each registered a goal against the Jaspers.
The Blackbirds (4-2-1) return home for a matchup with Saint Peter's on Friday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m., and is the second half of a soccer doubleheader at LIU Field with the women's team, who hosts Saint Joseph's beginning at 4:00 p.m.
