BROOKLYN, N.Y. - After a pair of impressive home wins last week, the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team is scheduled to tangle with Saint Peter's at LIU Field on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. The Blackbirds (4-2-1), who are ranked sixth in the Northeast region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, will then journey north for a matchup against Albany on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 p.m.
Sophomore Simen Hestnes, who was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week and earned national recognition as the top star of the week by NBC Sports College Soccer, registered a pair of goals and added three assists in wins over No. 22 Rider and Manhattan. Hestnes had the first goal of LIU's 2-1 victory over the Broncs, then had a hand in three of the Blackbirds' four scores in a 4-1 triumph against Manhattan.
Hestnes is tied for the team lead in goals with fellow sophomores Rasmus Hansen and Romario Guscott, and is knotted with Hansen for team highs with four assists and 10 points.
Saint Peter's (1-4-2) is coming off a heartbreaking 2-1, double-overtime loss at St. Francis Brooklyn on Wednesday. Yussuf Olajide found the back of the net with 2:24 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Terriers the win. The Peacocks have played in five straight overtime matches, going 1-2-2 over that span. Luke Fairlamb is the main cog offensively for SPU with four goals and three assists.
On Sunday, the Blackbirds will take on an Albany squad that is ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA Northeast Region Poll. The Great Danes battled nationally-ranked Boston College on Tuesday, falling in a high-scoring affair, 5-3. Albany took a 2-0 lead in the opening half but the Eagles scored four unanswered goals to take control. Afonson Pinheiro leads the team with four goals this season.
