Box Score UNION, N.J. - Sophomore Romario Guscott scored 3:28 into the first overtime period to lift the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over NJIT on Wednesday afternoon at Kean University. The win improves the Blackbirds to 6-3-1 on the year and gives them the most wins during a non-conference season since going 7-3 in 1992.
LIU Brooklyn put early pressure on the Highlanders, resulting in a shot on goal and a pair of corner kicks over the first 5:38. The contest would remain scoreless, however, until the 19th minute when freshman Giuseppe Barone took advantage of a miscue by NJIT goalkeeper Victor Pujades and scored his second goal of the year to push the Blackbirds in front, 1-0.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Logan Keys was able to keep NJIT off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period, making two stops on shots from Andrew Nino and Furkan Kokcu. The Blackbirds trailed in the shot category, 6-4, through the first 45 minutes of the contest but did have a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
The physical battle, which saw the two teams combine for 41 fouls, continued into the second stanza with each team limiting the other's opportunities. In the 64th minute, NJIT was able to crack LIU's defense when Diogo Ferreira found the back of the net off a feed from Zach Halma.
Keys continued to keep the contest knotted over the final 26 minutes of regulation, making three stops including two in the final two minutes to send the match into overtime. In the extra session, Guscott notched his fourth goal of the season off a pass from junior Naeem Charles to send the Blackbirds home winners. Guscott is now tied for the team lead in goals with Charles and fellow sophomore Simen Hestnes.
The Blackbirds will have an extended break before beginning their quest to defend the Northeast Conference regular-season championship they win last season with a road match at Bryant on Friday, Oct. 7 at 3:00 p.m.
