READING, Pa. – The LIU Brooklyn bowling team had a strong showing on the second day of the Kutztown Invitational, going 5-1 overall, including a big win over No. 3 nationally-ranked Vanderbilt. The No. 14-ranked Blackbirds finished the day with a total pin fall of 5,763, moving their two-day total to 11,289, good enough to move LIU up four spots, into tenth in the standings.
LIU opened the day with a 949-740 win over Chestnut Hill, led by junior Lauren McKowen's 206. Junior Kristina Genova had a 213 in the Blackbirds' next match, but it wasn't enough to get LIU past No. 21 Tulane. The Green Wave took the win by the narrowest of margins, 933-930, handing LIU what would be its only loss of the day.
LIU picked back up with its winning ways, in a decisive win over No. 20 Norfolk State, 1,010-841. Four Blackbirds bowled over 200 in the win, led by Genova, with a 224. Junior Alyssa Balicki had a 213, McKowen bowled a 2011, and senior Madison Lukosius added a 207.
The big win of the day came next, as LIU beat No. 3 Vanderbilt by just nine pins, 971-962. McKowen led the Blackbirds with a day-high 235, while sophomore Kayla Johnson added a 206 to help propel LIU to the win. A win over Youngstown State followed, 921-874. The Blackbirds wrapped up the day with a win against No.22 Monmouth, 982-871. Johnson led LIU in that match, bowling a 22-4, while Balicki added a 202.
