TEAM RESULTS
READING, P.A.- The LIU Brooklyn bowling team gotoff to a fast start, finishing undefeated today at the Kutztown University Bud Whitman Memorial in Reading, Pa. The No. 16 Blackbirds (5-0) were the only spotless team of the 19 schools at Colonial-Berks Lanes, but finished in second place in the Day 1 event, finishing with the second highest baker average, only .2 points behind a very common foe.
NEC rival No. 14 Saint Francis University took first place with a 198.0 average and a 4-1 record. LIU Brooklyn finished second with a 197.8 average. Youngstown State University (4-1) finished a distant third with 195.2 points.
The Blackbirds opened up the day with back-to-back easy victories in their first two matches, a low scoring 937-772 win over Felician College. Next was the most decisive win and most points scored, 1064-772, against Coppin State University. In the middle match of the day, LIU had a big comeback victory to beat No. 15 Adelphi University, 960-949. The fourth match of the afternoon was also a nail-biter, but the Blackbirds squeezed by No. 22 Franklin Pierce University, 965-941, before finishing strong, a 1018-740 thumping of Molloy College.
All-NEC performer Lauren McKowen (21.2) and sophomore Tyler Karpinecz (20.89) had the team's top averages and were named to the the All-Tournament Team.
The action resumes tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. with five traditional format matches, with LIU taking on Howard, Roberts Wesleyan, host Kutztown, No. 12 Delaware State and Chestnut Hill with the Blackbirds primed for another successful event.
