BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team will host the University at Albany for their final non-conference matchup, welcoming the Great Danes to LIU Field, Tuesday, October 3 at 6 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blackbirds moved to 1-5-2 last week, with a 1-1 double overtime tie at La Salle in Philadelphia.
LIU led until the 89th minute, when a last second goal by the home team forced the extra periods. The Blackbirds were able to get on the board first in the contest, scoring a goal in the 29th minute. After a La Salle foul was called in the box, Rasmus Hansen took the penalty kick. The junior forward would convert the opportunity, putting the Blackbirds up, 1-0. With just 41 seconds to go, the home team would get a ball in the back of the net. Beating the keeper to a ball, La Salle's Johnny Ciarlante would score inside the near post, tying the score up 1-1, as time ran down.
SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES
Albany is one of the stronger teams in the Northeast, with a 7-2 overall record, 1-0 in the America East conference. The Great Danes have struggled on the road, however, as they're 5-0 at home, but an even 2-2 out and about.
Albany is in the midst of a three-game winning streak, and coming off a huge conference opener. The Danes beat UMass Lowell, 1-0 at home. The Riverhawks, 2016 regular season champions, were picked as the preseason favorites in the America East. Albany brings heavy firepower to LIU Field Tuesday, as the Danes lead the America East in Scoring Offense, ranking 12th nationally.
Senior forward Afonso Pinheiro leads the Danes in points, with five goals and four assists so far this season, while junior defender Daniel Krutzen leads the team with six assists, along with two goals. Junior midfielder Carlos Clark has four goals this season, while junior forward Nico Solabarrieta has two goals and four assists.
The Danes have two keepers splitting time, but odds are good LIU will see redshirt junior Keeper Danny Vitiello. In five games, he's recorded three shutouts, and has so far tallied a .867 save percentage.
