PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – LIU Brooklyn women's tennis junior Anna Grigoryan had an outstanding performance at the 2017 ITA Regional Championships this weekend, notching four big wins en route to an appearance in the quarterfinals. Grigoryan, competing against the best players in the Northeast at the five day event hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, lost only one set on her way to the round of 16.
Grigoryan had some luck break her way in the first round, as her opponent, Maya Jacobs of Rutgers, withdrew in the second set due to injury. But from there, Grigoryan dominated. In her next match, she upset a seeded player, beating No. 3 seed senior Alyza Benotto of Brown in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
She advanced to take on junior Amy Yang of Yale, beating her handily as well, 6-1, 6-1. Another seeded player was upset in the next round, when Grigoryan defeated senior Priyanka Shah of Cornell, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. There, she fell to eventual finalist freshman Stephanie Schrage of Princeton, 6-4, 7-6(3).
Three other Blackbirds also took part in the weekend event, dropping four very close matches. All three singles matches went to three sets, with the Blackbirds just barely missing out on advancing.
In the qualifying draw, junior Malin Leysen fell to Jaci Cochrane of Rutgers, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, while sophomore Sasha Bollweg fell to Natacha Minc of NJIT, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Jessica Brzozowska also had a close loss, falling to Grace Lin of Lehigh, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2).
