BOSTON, Mass. – The LIU Brooklyn men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up their final meet before the 2017 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend, taking part in the David Hemerly Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University. Senior Cassandra Jones led the way for the Blackbirds, tallying the highest individual finish for LIU, and setting a new program record in the process.
The senior finished third in the 400m dash out of a field of nearly 90 runners, with a time of 54.82. The mark broke an LIU indoor track record that had stood for 19 years. The previous mark of 54.99 was set back in 1998, by Fateen Abdel-Baaith. Abdel-Baaith also holds the program record in the outdoor 400m, at 54.31. Jones, who was named the Most Outstanding Sprinter at the 2016 NEC Indoor Championships, will defend her individual title in the 500m next weekend.
Sophomore Shantae McDonald came in 11th in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.90 seconds, while sophomore Cayla Coleman ran a 1:17.79 in the 500m, good for 13th overall. And freshman Taylor Parker came in 15th in the shot put, with a final distance of 12.61m.
For the men, senior Karl Cajuste had two top-25 finishes to lead the squad. He came in 12th in the 200m dash, with a time of 21.87, and 22nd in the 60m hurdles, clocking in at 8.43 seconds. Freshman Sean Sinclair also did well in the 200m dash, coming in 19th with a time of 21.99. Sophomore Deshawne Bunion also had a top-10 finish, placing 10th in the 400m, with a time of 48.11.
Up next, the Blackbirds head back to the Ocean Breeze Track & Field facility on Staten Island, N.Y., for the 2017 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field championships. The two-day event will take place Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18.
