STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Though the LIU Brooklyn women's track & field teams finished the first day of the 2017 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field championship meet in fifth place, the Blackbirds performed well, and are poised to score major points in Saturday's finals.
LIU had some early points scored in field events Friday; in the high jump final, freshmen Angeli Andre and Stephanie Esogenwune scored points for the Blackbirds, coming in fourth and seventh in the event. And in the long jump, Teena Mobley finished fourth, with a best jump of 5.35 meters, while Esogenwune placed sixth with a jump of 5.17m.
The Blackbirds, like their male counterparts, dominated the sprint preliminaries Friday. Three LIU athletes qualified for the finals of the 60m dash; senior Satima Chambers was the top qualifier for the day, finishing the even in 7.68 seconds, while classmate Cassandra Jones will go into the finals as the number three finisher with a time of 7.80. And sophomore Shantae McDonald also qualified for the finals in the eighth and final spot, running a 7.91.
Those three Blackbirds were also the top three finishers in the 200-meter dash preliminaries, a race that will have four of the eight top spots filled with Blackbirds. Jones came in first, with a time of 24.84 seconds, while McDonald was right behind her at 24.85. Chambers finished as the third seed, with a time of 25.25, and freshman T'Rejyah Johnson made it a 50 percent LIU final, coming in as the fifth qualifier with a time of 25.50.
Chambers and Johnson continued to help the Blackbirds dominate sprints, as both advanced to the finals of the 400m dash as well; Chambers qualified with a time of 59.58 seconds, while Johnson came in at 58.64.
The 500 is another race that will have strong LIU presence, with three of the eight spots in black and silver. Jones took the top qualifying time, winning her heat in 1:15.83, an ECAC automatic qualifier. Sophomore Cayla Coleman advanced to the finals with her time of 1:17.78, and sophomore Zaahira Deboise will join them both there, with her time of 1:19.55.
Hurdles will be a strong final for LIU as well. McDonald was also the fastest finisher in the 60m hurdles, with an ECAC qualifying time of 8.80 seconds, while sophomore Deja Johnson also advanced to the championship race in the number six spot, with her time of 9.14 seconds.
