SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The LIU Brooklyn baseball team fell to Bryant on the road Friday afternoon, dropping a 7-2 decision to the Bulldogs at Conaty Park. The Blackbirds led the defending NEC champions until the sixth inning, when the home team broke the game open to take the win.
The Blackbirds got on the board early in the game, scoring in the top of the first inning. Senior
Charles Misiano led off with a single and stole second. Junior
Dom Paiotti was walked, and a fly out put Misiano in scoring position. A failed pick off attempt by Bryant's starter went awry, and Misiano was able to score on the error, putting LIU up, 1-0.
The game would be tied in the bottom of the second inning when LIU walked in a run, but the Blackbirds would get back on top in the fourth inning. Junior
Andrew Turner had a one-out home run to left field to put LIU up, 2-1.
Bryant went up for the first time in the bottom of the sixth frame. With two outs, a walk, a single and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position. A single up the middle scored two runs, and the Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead. Bryant would tack on four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, on a three-RBI triple and a wild pitch, taking the lead, 7-2.
Junior Jack Patterson would come in to relieve starter James Karinchak in the final three innings of action, limiting LIU to just one hit while striking out four, and clinching the nine-inning victory for the home team, 7-2.
The two teams resume the series with a double header, Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
