BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn women's tennis freshman Sasha Bollweg was named the Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. It is the second straight week that Bollweg earned the Rookie honors, and her first Player of the Week award.
Bollweg improved her dual match win streak to five with a pair of #2 singles wins last week for the Blackbirds, who enter this week's NEC Tournament as the top seed. Bollweg posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over FDU's Marta Ruszczynska to help LIU clinch an undefeated NEC regular season with a 4-3 win over the defending conference champs on Saturday. The following afternoon, the Melbourne native knocked off All-America East player Yana Nikolaeva, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, in LIU's 4-3 triumph over Stony Brook. At 12-3 on the year, Bollweg is tied with teammate Malin Leysen for the highest win percentage (.800) in the NEC this season. She became the third player to win dual NEC Player and Rookie of the Week honors in 2016-17, joining Saint Francis U's Laura Gutierrez and the Mount's Alexa Quinanilla.
Up next, LIU heads to West Winsor, New Jersey, to take part in the 2017 Northeast Conference women's tennis championship tournament, Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23.
