WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn baseball team had a big midweek non-conference win on the road Wednesday night, beating Manhattan for the second time this season, 11-3. Freshman
Patrick Clyne (1-0) earned the win on the mound, with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings, giving up just one run in his second start of the season.
LIU gave Clyne a head start, scoring the first run of the game in the first inning of play. Three walks would lead to a RBI fielder's choice for junior
Andrew Turner, and the Blackbirds led, 1-0.
The scoring started surging in the second inning for LIU. Two walks and a single would load the bases with no outs, and senior
Charles Misiano had a single through the left side that would bring two runners home. A single and a sacrifice fly would score the next run, putting LIU up, 4-0, and with the bases loaded once more, senior
Harrison Preschel had an RBI when he was hit by a pitch to walk in the fifth run. Freshman
Joe Curcio was then walked to make it 6-0. Sophomore
Andrew Smith would add a run to the pile with his RBI single through the left side, and sophomore
Luis Arias de los Santos capped the spree with a bases-clearing double to right center field that put the Blackbirds up, 10-0.
Preschel would add one more run in the top of the fourth with a lead-off home run to left field, putting LIU on top, 11-3.
Manhattan would add one run on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, and scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth, but senior reliever
Matt Ornstein would retire all three batters in the bottom of the ninth to end the game, and clinch the victory for the Blackbirds.
Up next, the Blackbirds host Mount St. Mary's for a three-game series this weekend on LIU Field, starting Friday, April 21 at 3 p.m.
