BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn baseball team dropped the four game of the series Sunday afternoon at LIU Field, falling to the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, 3-0. With the loss, the Blackbirds move to 11-13 on the season, and 2-5 in Northeast Conference action, while CCSU improves to 16-12 and 7-3.
CCSU scored three runs spread out over multiple innings, getting on the board in the top of the first. A two-out double was brought home on an LIU error, putting the visitors up, 1-0. Senior starter
Nick Freijomil would go 1-2-3 over the next two innings, keeping LIU in the game.
In the top of the fourth, the Blue Devils added one run to the total. Three walks led to an RBI groundout, but Freijomil was able to get the final two outs and end the inning, limiting the damage, 2-0. CCSU's final run of the game would come in the top of the sixth, when a failed pitch off attempt and a balk brought the Blue Devil runner around the bases, making it 3-0.
The Blackbirds had five hits in the game, including two by junior
Andrew Turner, but six runners were left stranded by LIU throughout the game, and CCSU was able to get the shutout win on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Freijomil (3-4) had the loss on the mound, with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Freshman
Patrick Clyne and sophomore
Mike Kreiger combined to hold CCSU scoreless for the final 3.0 innings of action, combining for four more strikeouts.
CCSU's Mike Delease (1-0) had the win, with 5.0 scoreless innings, while Patrick Mitchell had his second save of the season, holding LIU to just two hits over the final 4.0 innings.
