BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team will host their first game in downtown Brooklyn this Wednesday, September 6, hosting the New Jersey Institute of Technology on LIU Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blackbirds played two games in North Carolina last week, but only one was counted. Friday's game at NC State was called in the first half due to lightning. The game, which had only reached the 30-minute mark, will not count and will not be rescheduled. The Blackbirds had out-shot the Wolfpack 6-1 early in the contest, but NC State had the 1-0 lead in the game when play was suspended.
In Sunday's game at Appalachian State, the Blackbirds came back from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game in the 72nd minute on a goal from Naeem Charles, but couldn't score again, and the game ended in double overtime with a 1-1 tie.
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS
NJIT is off to a strong start this season, at 3-0-1, with all four games on the road so far. The Highlanders had 1-0 wins over Sacred Heart and Navy to start the season, and went 1-0-1 in Florida last weekend. NJIT finished with a 2-2 tie against Florida International, in a game that was also called due to lightning, and wrapped up the road trip with a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic.
The Highlanders had two players recognized by the ASUN conference this week. Senior forward Mamadou Guirassy, who ranks tied for third among the NCAA in total goals (5), was selected ASUN Conference Player of the Week, scoring all five Highlander goals, including two game-winners, earning his first career ASUN Player of the Week award. He leads the ASUN in goals (5) and points (10) and has notched a goal in three-out-of-four games this season for NJIT.
And sophomore Victor Pujades, the Highlanders' starting keeper, ranks tied for third among the NCAA in shutouts (3). He collected the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week award after recording two shutouts and keeping the Highlanders the only undefeated team in the ASUN. He leads the ASUN in goals against average (0.50), save percentage (.846).
