2017 NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll
SOMERSET, N.J. --- The Northeast Conference announced its 2017 Fall Academic Award winners Tuesday afternoon, including the Fall Academic Honor Roll and the NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll. 56 Blackbirds were honored for their work in the classroom, including 17 student-athletes who earned the distinction of being named to the Fall Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The NEC Fall Academic Honor Roll consists of 765 student-athletes with a 3.20 or better grade-point average, up 12.5 percent from 2016. Of those selections, 241 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, recognizing those superior student-athletes with a 3.75 or better grade point average. The Commissioner's honorees make up a 7.1 percent increase from the year prior.
For the Blackbirds, 17 student athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Six women's soccer student-athletes (Maria Harley, Becky Michael, Devan Noll, Jenn Peters, Megan Virgin, Leslie Wrightington), five from men's soccer (Ahmad Elfaham, Frej Engberg, Filip Nordström, Christoffer Bjarre Solbakken, Erik Wahlin), four from volleyball (Filippa Hansson, Emily Magee, Natalia Rivera, Masa Zirojevic) and two from cross country (Ashton Burton, Sarah Northup) composed LIU's contingent on the prestigious list.
In total, 56 fall athletes earned academic acknowledgement from the league. Leading the way on the Academic Honor Roll was women's soccer, who had 18 student-athletes named to the list. Men's soccer picked up 17 honorees, women's volleyball added 12 selections and women's cross country earned nine recipients. Volleyball, who claimed the NEC regular season and tournament crowns in 2017, placed a school-best 92 percent of its roster (12 of 13) on the Academic Honor Roll.
