Men's Basketball Meets Mount St. Mary's in Nationally-Televised Matchup

EMMITSBURG, Md. - The LIU Brooklyn men's basketball team is headed south to face off against Mount St. Mary's Thursday night, in a contest that will air nationally on CBS Sports Network. Slated to tip off in Knott Arena at 9 p.m., the game will be called by Dave Popkin and Joe DeSantis, and marks the second time these two teams have met in Northeast Conference action this season.

  • The Blackbirds (9-12, 4-4 NEC) had their three-game win streak snapped Saturday afternoon in Detrick Gymnasium, as the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils beat the Blackbirds 72-63. LIU was led by sophomore Jashaun Agosto, who tied his career high with 22 points in the game; the point guard went 7-for-14 from the field, including 4-for-8 from three-point range to lead all players in scoring. Senior Joel Hernandez had 15 points in the loss, along with four rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
  • CCSU out-rebounded LIU, 42-29, including 16 offensive rebounds. The Blue Devils also outscored LIU in the paint, 34-22, including 15 second-chance points. LIU scored 16 points off of CCSU turnovers, despite just three steals in the game.
  • Mount enters Thursday's game at 10-11 overall, and also 4-4 in the NEC. The Mountaineers are coming off a brutal last second loss to FDU last weekend, 73-72.
  • Mount's Junior Robinson is the only player in the league averaging more points per game that LIU's Hernandez. He leads the league and ranks 15th in the nation, averaging 21.7 points per game. The 5-5 senior guard is also ranked ninth in the country in total points scored (456), 11th in free throw percentage (.913), and 21st in minutes played.
  • Last time the two teams faced off in Brooklyn on New Year's Eve, limiting Robinson was the key to LIU's 71-57 victory. The Blackbirds' defense held Robinson to just 12 points, on 5-for-15 shooting.
  • The Blackbirds shot 55.6 percent from the field in the win to Mount St. Mary's 38.8 percent. LIU also shot 52.4 percent from three-point range, and out-rebounded the Mount, 34-24.
  • For LIU, Hernandez led all players with 21 points, while junior Raiquan Clark was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Julian Batts was also on fire, scoring 13 points, shooting 4-for-5 from three-point range.
  • Up next, the Blackbirds return home to seek revenge on the Blue Devils just one week after their first meeting. LIU will host CCSU, Saturday, January 27 as a part of a doubleheader with the women's team, tipping off at 4:30 p.m.
