BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU men's soccer freshman Huib Achterkamp was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. Achterkamp, who earns the first weekly honors of his career, is the fourth different Blackbird to be recognized this season, and the second-straight Rookie of the Week for LIU.
Achterkamp scored his first collegiate goal in LIU Brooklyn's 2-1 overtime victory against Brooklyn rival St. Francis Brooklyn in its NEC opener on Sunday. In the 15th minute, the 6' 4" rookie found the back of the net, heading home a corner kick from Giuseppe Barone. The freshman defender has played in all 10 of LIU's games, with nine starts, and anchors the Blackbird defense.
Up next, the Blackbirds (6-3-1, 1-0 NEC) welcome CCSU to LIU Field for a Friday night showdown, October 5 at 6 p.m.
