Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis had a huge win over Northeast powerhouse the University of Massachusetts Saturday afternoon, beating the Minutemen, 4-3. With the win, the Blackbirds move to 3-1 in dual matches this season.
 
LIU clinched the doubles point early on, in what would prove to be the deciding point of the match. Junior Malin Leysen and sophomore Jennifer Gogova had the first win of the day, beating their opponents at No. 3, 6-2. UMass would take a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot over Ana Leonte and Anna Grigoryan, evening the two teams up. It came down to the No.1 doubles spot, where Sasha Bollweg and Jessica Brzozwska were battling with Laura Moreno and Ana Yrazusta. The LIU duo came out on top, 6-4, clinching the doubles point and giving the Blackbirds a 1-0 match lead.
 
In singles, the two teams went point for point, making it a dramatic match. Junior Anna Grigoryan had the first win for the Blackbirds, beating Ruth Frawford, 6-3, 6-2 in the No.1 singles spot, giving LIU the 2-0 lead. From there, junior Malin Leysen gave the Blackbirds a 3-0 lead with her win in the No. 4 spot. She beat Laura Moreno, 6-4, 6-2.
 
UMass would start to come back, however, scoring their first team point of the day with a win at No. 2 singles. There, Ana Yrazusta beat Sasha Bollweg, 6-4, 6-4. The Minutemen cut the lead to 3-2 with a win at No.3 singles, where Janja Kovcevic beat Jessica Brzozowska in a three set thriller, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
 
But sophomore Jennifer Gogova would clinch the match win for LIU with her win in the No. 5 spot. She beat Laura Moreno, 6-4, 7-5, to give the Blackbirds their match-winning fourth point. With the match determined, the battle at No. 6 singles went to a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. Martina Bocchi got the best of LIU's Clemence Krug there, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
 
Up next, the Blackbirds take on Hofstra on the road, Saturday, February 17 at 10 a.m.
