SCOUTING THE BLACKBIRDS
LIU will be looking to replicate its success at the 2017 championship, when the Blackbirds finished in fourth place overall, despite having one of the smallest contingents in the field. The Blackbirds boast two defending champions in sophomore Noemie Lacroix-Moreau and junior Briana Vega. Vega will look to defend the 50 freestyle on Thursday, while Lacroix-Moreau will be aiming for gold again in the 200 butterfly on Saturday. Last year, LIU also scored big with three relay squads finishing on the podium, and the team is striving to improve on that success this week.
The Blackbirds have already succeeded in a championship meet this season, finishing in fourth place overall at the ECAC Championships back in December. The Blackbirds came home with several individual medals as well, including two gold, four silvers and two bronze medals. Vega won the 50 freestyle (23.45), tying the ECAC Championship meet record, and senior Milly Furneaux earned individual gold in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.44). Freshman Amanda Peren earned a silver medal in the 100 backstroke and bronze in the 200 back, while classmate Jeanne Touchette-McGowan took the silver medal in the 200 back. LIU also placed two relays on the medal stand - the 400 medley relay (second place) and the 400 freestyle relay (third).
PACE SETTERS
Entering the championship meet, LIU has at least one athlete who hold a top-three time in the NEC this year, including two league leaders:
