FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -The LIU Brooklyn bowling team swept the team's three matches on day two of the final NEC meet of the regular season, Saturday in Farmingdale, Long Island. The Blackbirds (8-6 NEC) beat Caldwell, St. Francis Brooklyn and No. 12 Sacred Heart as they head into the final day of competition aiming for one of the top two spots in the final Northeast Conference standings.
The Blackbirds began Saturday with a traditional match win over Caldwell, 852-836 to get back to the .500 mark after the second set of round robin play. LIU then had a bye, before switching to total pinfall baker (five-game) matches in the afternoon.
A battle of the two co-hosting teams led off the last set of round robin play, with the Blackbirds beating the Terriers by 43 pins, 874-831. In the final match on Saturday against SHU, the Blackbirds threw two games of the five over the 200 pin mark, including a 223 in game four to build the lead over 100 pins. Behind the team's four seniors, Lauren McKowen, Marlee Tyler, Alyssa Balicki and Kristina Genova along with sophomore Tyler Karpinecz, LIU topped SHU, 963-896.
The meet will conclude on Sunday with four baker matches (five-game total pinfall) for LIU beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Blackbirds will face (in order): No. 14 Saint Francis U., Caldwell, No. 10 Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 18 Duquesne, to decide which two schools will finish on the top of the standings and receive first-round byes in next month's NEC Championships.
