BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's swimming team fell to defending Northeast Conference champions Central Connecticut State in the last meet of the regular season on Saturday. The Blue Devils triumphed in their first visit to the Steinberg Wellness Center, 160-77.
It was a bittersweet day for the Blackbirds, as senior team captain
Milly Furneaux waved a competitive goodbye to the LIU Pool. The Devon, England native was the founding member of the LIU Brooklyn women's swimming program four years ago, and the program's first-ever graduating senior. Furneaux didn't swim in the meet due to injury, but is expected back for the NEC Championships in just over two week's time.
The Blackbirds' Briana Vega soared in the meet, winning both of her freestyle sprints, the 50 free in 24.16 and the 100 free in 53.42, for LIU's two individual wins on the day.
Vega also anchored the first place 200 freestyle relay, with freshmen Jodi Hawki,
Amanda Peren and sophomore
Noemie Lacroix-Moreau, touching in at 1:39.08 to close out the meet. The dual meet began with the Blackbirds taking second in the 200 medley relay (1:53.02) with Vega swimming the anchor leg, following
Jeanette Touchette-McGowan,
Mads Carrigan and
Kyleigh Barao.
QUICK LAPS
- Peren narrowly missed out on the top spot in the 100 backstroke, slotting second in 59.31, just 0.11 behind first place... Lacroix-Moreau placed second in the 100 butterfly and Barao was second in the 200 butterfly for the home team.
- The Blackbirds finished the 2017-18 regular season with a 5-4 team record, guaranteeing the team a winning dual meet record for the second time in the three years of the LIU swim program.
- Next up, the eight conference rivals will converge at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow for the 2018 NEC Championships, Wednesday, February 15 through Saturday, February 18.
