BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced that 389 student-athletes from 164 programs have received 2018 NFCA Division I All-Region accolades. Three members of the LIU Brooklyn softball team earned honors this year: seniors
Victoria Zamora,
Nereyda Gutierrez and
Angie Vazquez.
Zamora earned second team All-Northeast Region honors at catcher, while Gutierrez earned third team honors at first base and Vazquez earned the honor as a utility player.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first, second and third-team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2018 NFCA Division I All-American squads.
Zamora, who was named first team All-NEC and earned the league's Golden Glove award, earned the third NFCA honors of her career. She was named third team as a freshman, and earned second team in the outfield last year. Vazquez earned first team All-NEC honors this year, ending up leading the Blackbirds at the plate, with a .391 batting average. She also had 23 RBI, and was named NEC Player of the Week in late April. It is the first All-Region honor of her career.
And Gutierrez finished the season third on the team with a .352 batting average, along with six home runs, and 29 RBI. She was second on the team with a .525 slugging percentage, and had 119 putouts at first base this season, with just two errors for a .984 fielding percentage.
