BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team returns home after two weeks on the road this weekend, hosting Rider, Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. on LIU Field. The two teams have had a heated rivalry in recent years.
Two years ago, LIU beat the Broncs when they were ranked No.22 in the country, 2-1. And last year, the Blackbirds fell to Rider on the road, 2-1 in double overtime.
LAST TIME OUT
LIU travels to California for two games. The Blackbirds lost to San Diego State, 2-1, but capped the weekend with a win, beating Loyola Marymount, 3-1. With the win, the Blackbirds finished second at the 11th annual Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Aztec Soccer Tournament.
After the tournament was over, LIU had four athletes honored. Freshman Huib Achterkamp was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player, while seniors Rasmus Hansen and Christoffer Bjarre Solbakken, along with sophomore Erik Johansson, were named to the All-Tournament team.
SCOUTING THE BRONCS
Rider comes into the weekend with a 1-3-1 record. The Broncs share a host of common opponents with LIU. In their season opener, Rider went to double OT before tying with Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-1. They also lost to NJIT, 1-0, and beat La Salle, 1-0, who are LIU's next two opponents. Most recently, they're coming off a 1-0 double overtime loss against Lehigh.
Rider has only scored two goals this season, from senior forward Elliot Otmani, and sophomore forward Pablo DeCastro. Otmani also has the team's lone assist this season.
