BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team swept the Northeast Conference's weekly awards, it was announced by the league Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Fredrik Mathisen was named the NEC Player of the Week, while freshman Sam Ilin was named the NEC's Rookie of the Week. It is the first time for both athletes earning weekly awards.
Mathisen tallied a goal and an assist in LIU's 3-0 win over Rider on Saturday. The sophomore one-touched the ball into the back of the net in the 79th minute to make it 2-0, then less than 90 seconds later, placed a perfect through ball to Michael Ginanino, who scored the third and final goal of the game. Mathisen currently leads the Blackbirds in goals (3) and is tied for the team high in assists (3).
Ilin recorded his first career shutout on Saturday, making six saves in a 3-0 Blackbirds' win over Rider. The freshman preserved the shutout late in the contest, making two point blank saves as LIU improved to 2-0-1 at home this season.
