MALIBU, Calif. - Reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year Anna Grigoryan took part in the Oracle ITA Masters Tournament this past weekend, which featured the top Division I tennis players in the nation, and took place at the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University.
Grigoryan, who earned an automatic spot because of her Player of the Year honors, took part in both the women's singles draw and the mixed doubles draw, with Bryant senior Matt Kuhar.
In singles, Grigoryan opened her draw taking on the No. 2 ranked player in the nation, North Carolina's Makenna Jones. Jones, who was the seven seed in the bracket, won, 6-2, 6-3. Grigoryan found some success in the back draw, however. In the first round there, she defeated No. 43 Maria Kononova from North Texas, 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-2. But in the second round, she fell to a familiar foe, No, 89 Jessica Livianu of St. John's, 6-4, 6-4.
In the mixed doubles draw, Grigoryan was paired with the NEC's men's Player of the Year, Kuhar, and the duo had an early round win. In the first round Thursday, the duo beat a mixed pair from Illinois and UNC, in the form of No. 27 Sara Daavettila (UNC) and No. 96 Zeke Clark (Illinois), 7-5.
In the second round, they took on a mixed pair from Vanderbilt and UT Arlington, and fell to No. 7 Fernanda Contreras (Vanderbilt) and No. 56 Guanarteme Nuez Delgado (UT Arlington), 6-4.
