RESULTS
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn women's track & field team started off the 2019 calendar year competing at the Wagner College Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon.
Senior Ashley Blackwell was the top performer in the 60 meter dash with a new personal-best and ECAC qualifying time of 7.76 seconds. Her time ranks as the third fastest mark in the NEC this season. Sophomore Toni Glatz also finished within the top-three with a personal best time of 7.84. In the 400 meter event, senior Deja Johnson finished eighth overall with a time of 1:02.58.
LIU followed that up with three finishers in the top-10 for the 500 meter event. Senior Cayla Coleman led the charge with a season-best time of 1:17.51 to place third overall. Her tine ranks second in the NEC this season in the 500 meter event. Ekenedilichukwu Christine Onyechi ran a personal-best mark of 1:19.20 to finish fifth. Right behind her in sixth was sophomore Tara Hernandez with a mark of 1:19.28.
The Blackbirds also recorded a top-10 mark in the mile event as senior Eugenie Hue finished ninth with a personal best time of 5:10.32. Her performance is the second fastest time in school history.
LIU closed the track portion with a stellar showing in the 4x400 relay event with two teams finishing in the top three. The group of Coleman, Hue, Hernandez and Onyechi ran a time of 3:56.14 to finish second. Right behind them was the squad of Blackwell, Glatz, Johnson and senior Shantae McDonald with a time of 3:57.89 to take third.
In the field events, Stephanie Esogenwune finished second overall with a tumor of 5.17 meters in her second to last attempt of the afternoon.
The Blackbirds are back in action next Saturday in Staten Island as they compete in the Great Dane Classic.
