Women's Track & Field Claims Two Event Wins At Metropolitan Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn women's track & field team recorded two first-place finishes at the 2019 Metropolitan Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon. Senior Eugenie Hue earned the event win in the 500 meters and junior Taylor Parker claimed first in the shot put, both setting new school records in the process. 

Hue, the reigning NEC Track Athlete of the Week recorded a new personal-best and school record in the 500, crossing the finish line at 1:12.52. She bested the 21-year school record time of 1:13.20 set by Joi Brown back in 1998. She currently ranks as the fifth fastest among ECAC qualifiers in the event.

Parker set her new personal-best and school record on her final throw of the afternoon with a toss of 14.65 meters. She bested her previous school and personal best mark of 14.40 that she set back in 2018. The junior currently paces the NEC in the event. 

In the 4x800 meter relay, the team of senior Cayla Coleman, Hue, sophomore Stephanie Reyes and freshman Jasmine Douglas-Grant took third with a time of 9:41.82. Sophomore Tara Hernandez claimed 10th in the 60-meter hurdles for LIU with a personal-best time of 9.30 meters.

LIU finished ninth overall at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships with 26 points on the day. Rutgers claimed the team title on the women's side. 

The Blackbirds close out the weekend tomorrow, Saturday, February 2 at the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
