BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Haley Irvis, a junior on the LIU Brooklyn softball team was named the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Irvis was the winning pitcher in both of LIU's victories at the competitive FGCU Kickoff Classic. The junior tossed 15.2 innings over three starts and finished with a 2-1 record, 0.89 ERA and 14 strikeouts. The highlight of her week was earning a victory over a Florida Gulf Coast team that received votes in the NFCA/USA Today coaches preseason poll. Irvis gave up one earned run on just two hits through five innings of work as LIU went on post a 3-2 win over FGCU on Sunday. Her first win of the season came against Kent State the previous day, when she threw a complete game eight-hitter, allowing only one run en route to a 3-1 victory. She also had seven strikeouts against Ball State in the season opener on Friday.
This weekend, the Blackbirds head back to sunny Florida for the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Tournament at Disney in Lake Buena Vista from Friday, Feb. 15, through Sunday, Feb. 17. Over the three days, LIU will face (in order): Bethune-Cookman, UMass, Villanova, Troy and Stetson.
