FORT MYERS, Fla.— The LIU Brooklyn baseball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast University 10-0 on Friday evening. The Blackbirds were outhit by the Eagles, 13-4 at Swanson Stadium to open the weekend series.
LIU threatened with runners in scoring position in the top of the second inning on a pair of one out walks but were unable to capitalize. FGCU got on the board with a one-out home run by Richie Garcia in the second inning against senior
Zach Pederson. The home team would get two more runs in the inning on a RBI single and delayed steal effort to go up 3-0.
The Eagles then added four runs on four hits in the bottom half of the third inning to jump ahead 7-0. LIU would get a pair of hits over the next two innings by senior
Brock Hallum and junior
Tim Bechtold but both would get stranded on base.
Senior
Gregory Vaughn Jr. picked up a one-out single in the top of the sixth inning for the Blackbirds. After a walk put runners on the corners, the home team was able to escape the inning with a double play. FGCU would tack on a run in the seventh and a pair of runs in the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
Pederson would pitch three innings in the start for LIU, registering four strikeouts in the loss. Freshman
Nick Torres pitched the next three innings in relief surrendering just one hit while striking out two. Seniors
Anthony Rupp and
Jonathan Schreier along with redshirt sophomore
Frank Cerillo also made appearances out the the Blackbirds bullpen.
