PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa.— The LIU Brooklyn baseball team earned its second shutout win of the season, beating Villanova 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Seniors Gregory Vaughn Jr. and Luiny Monegro led LIU with two hits each. Vaughn added a pair of walks and the games lone run batted in on the day. Senior Andrew Smith recorded two runs scored. Freshman Nick Torres earned his first career win, holding the Wildcats to just three hits over seven innings. Junior Rob Griswold added a scoreless inning of relief and senior Mike Kreiger closed out the game for his third save of the season.

The Blackbirds got on the board in the top half of the third inning as Smith picked up a two-out single and advanced to second on a balk. Vaughn then roped a single up the middle for the 1-0 lead.

LIU scratched another run in the top of the seventh as Monegro opened the frame with a single. After a walk to senior Joe Mercadante, Smith recorded a sacrifice bunt to position runners in scoring position for the Blackbirds. Monegro would score on a wild pitch for LIU's second run.

Torres was dealing for the Blackbirds over the first seven innings, he ended his outing with a strikeout to close the seventh inning.

The Blackbirds recorded their final run of the game in the top half of the ninth as Smith earned a five-pitch walk and then swiped second base for his sixth stolen base of the season. He advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a wild pitch to cap the scoring.
