BROOKLYN, N.Y.— A total team effort at the dish helped propel the LIU Brooklyn baseball team to a 13-2 win over Siena College on Tuesday afternoon. All nine hitters in the LIU lineup contributed a hit against the Saints at LIU Field.
The Blackbirds three, four and five hitters in the lineup contributed multi-hit games as seniors
Alex Briggs,
Brock Hallum, and
Andrew Smith all recorded a pair of hits. Smith produced a season-high four runs batted in including a two-run triple and Briggs added a three-run double for LIU. Hallum added a team-high three runs scored and Briggs and sophomore
Colin Adams crossed the plate twice.
It was a pitcher's duel between the Siena's James Flood and freshman
Chris Buehler through the first four innings, surrendering just three combined hits.
The Saints used a sacrifice fly in the top half of the fifth inning to break open the scoring.
LIU's offense got going in the bottom half of the inning, loading up the bases on a single by junior
Tim Bechtold and a walk to senior
Luiny Monegro and a hit by pitch by Adams. Senior
Joe Mercadante worked a five-pitch walk to bring in the tying run. Two batters later, Hallum lined a two-run double double down the left field line to give LIU the two run lead. An error on a throw home added to the lead for the Blackbirds. Smith tallied a two-RBI triple to the gap in left center and Monegro picked up a RBI single to cap the emphatic seven run frame.
The Blackbirds added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI single by Smith with the bases loaded to jump ahead 9-1.
Siena scored their final run in the top of the seventh inning on a leadoff home run. LIU capped the game's scoring in the bottom half of the inning on a three-RBI double by Briggs and a sacfrice fly from Bechtold to bring the score to 13-2.
Buehler earned his third win of the season, pitching five frames for LIU. He allowed just one run on three hits while striking out five. Senior
Zach Pederson added a shutout inning of relief with a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore
James Steindl pitched the next two innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Senior
Frank Cerillo closed out the final two thirds of the ninth, striking out two.
