HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn baseball team earned a 10-1 win over Hofstra on Wednesday afternoon. The Blackbirds offense recorded 13 hits in the win and its pitching staff held the Pride to just three hits at University Field.

Nine different batters contributed a hit for LIU, including three multi-hit showings. Senior Luiny Monegro recorded a career-high three hits and four runs batted in. Sophomore James Steindl picked up his first career home run and a pair of hits. Senior Andrew Smith added a pair of hits to go along with three runs scored.

The offense was slow to get going through the first three frames as LIU's Chris Buehler and Hofstra's Mark Faello gave up just three combined hits.

LIU got the first crack in the top half of the fourth as senior Alex Briggs earned a one-out single. A groundout to second advanced Briggs to second with two outs. Smith stepped to the plate and lined a single to short, Briggs never stopped running on the play from second base, allowing him to score on the throw over for the 1-0 lead. The inning continued as junior Tim Bechtold earned a RBI single up the middle to score smith for the 2-0 favor.

The Blackbirds picked up another pair of runs in the top of the sixth as Monegro recorded a two-out double to right field to put the team ahead 4-0.

Hofstra recorded its lone run of the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning on a one-out home run to right field for the 4-1 Blackbird lead.

LIU added two more runs in the top of the eighth as Monegro recorded another big two-out hit, this time a two-run single to center field. The Blackbirds capped the scoring with a four run ninth inning, with two runs scoring on a RBI single from Smith on an error and Steindl lifting the home run over the right field wall for the 10-1 favor.

Buehler earned his first career win as he pitched four innings for the Blackbirds, surrendering just two hits. Seniors Zach Pederson and Frank Cerillo delivered scoreless inning of relief and junior Rob Griswold dished out two hitless frames as well.
