BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The No. 1 LIU Brooklyn softball team (34-17) had their five-game win streak stopped by No. 3 Saint Francis U. (28-28) in game three of the the 2019 Northeast Conference Championship at LIU Field on Friday. The two-time defending champion Red Flash (28-28) move immediately to Saturday's championship final, while the Blackbirds go into the loser's bracket, with the an elimination game up next at 5:00 p.m. versus the winner of game four, either No. 2 Sacrd Heart or No. 4 Mount St. Mary's.

The Blackbirds took the lead first in the bottom of the second inning on infield error for a brief 1-0 lead. But in the top of the third, Kassidy Troxell hit a grand slam to put Saint Francis up 4-1. LIU got a run back in the bottom of the third frame on a sacrifice fly to left field by Camryn Lyman to score Katie Hinkle from third.

After facing the first batter in the fourth inning, LIU junior Tallie Woodson came in relief of freshman starter Elena Valenzuela (18-4), who went the first 3.1 innings. The Red Flash added a run off Woodson in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-2. Woodson went the final 3.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and striking out three.

Senior Schae Dickson, who led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk, came around to score the third run for the Blackbirds on a Kiana Cisneros single to centerfield. The rally was upended on the next play when Cisneros tried to go first to third on a Ryleigh Bermea single to centerfield, and was thrown out at third base.

BLACKBIRD BITS
The Blackbirds made two outstanding defensive plays for the highlight reel, first a great throw from Hinkle in left field in the top of the third directly to catcher Samantha Garcia to temporarily keep the Red Flash scoreless; then in the top of the fourth, Cisneros went well into the hole on the left side to make a diving catch on a liner and thwart a rally. Cisneros was the only Blackbird to get two hits in the game, going two-for-three with an RBI…  LIU was undefeated at home going into the game, and now fall to 12-1 at the Birdcage… Valenzuela, who picked up her first loss since March 16 against Towson.
