BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The No. 1 LIU Brooklyn softball team (35-17) outslugged No. 4 Mount St. Mary's (26-28) with a 9-1 win in game five at the 2019 Northeast Conference Championship at LIU Field on Friday. The win sets up a rematch with two-time defending champion Saint Francis U. (28-28) on Championship Saturday at 12:00 p.m. SFU sent LIU into the loser's bracket with a 5-3 loss earlier on Friday setting up the rematch with Mount. The Blackbirds will have to beat the Red Flash twice on Saturday to earn the title, while SFU only needs one more win to close out the Championships.
NEC Pitcher of the Year Elena Valenzuela (19-4) had one of her strongest outings of the season, giving up only three hits (one run) on 57 pitches, with no walks.
Mount took the early lead in a rematch from Thursday's opening game on a solo homer in the first by Morgan Alisauckas. But in the top of the third, senior Schae Dickson nailed a triple to the right field fence with two runners on to put the Blackbirds ahead, 2-1.
In the fourth inning, the Blackbirds pulled away with two home runs in the frame. First freshman catcher Samantha Garcia hit a bomb to left field, a solo shot to make the score 3-1. Then later in the frame with the bases loaded the team's other freshman all-star position player, second baseman Camryn Lyman picked a big spot for her first collegiate career homer, clearing the bases for a 7-1 lead.
Then in the top of the seventh frame, Garcia had her second big hit of the game, a single to score Kiana Cisneros for an 8-1 Blackbirds lead. Then with freshman Kristen Blanchard, running for Garcia, she scored the winning run on a wild pitch, to end the game on the 8-run rule, 9-1.
BLACKBIRD BITS
As the away team in the game, the Blackbirds were in unfamiliar territory batting first on their home field...Like Dickson did last season, Lyman hit her first home run of the season in the NEC Tournament… Katie Hinkle and Garcia were each 3-for-3 in the game with three runs scored combined… On the mound, Valenzuela, who had no walks also had no strikeouts for the first time in a complete game this season. She has a NEC high 17 complete games on the year.
