SMITHFIELD, R.I.— The LIU Brooklyn baseball team closed out its series finale with a 3-2 loss at Bryant on Sunday afternoon. The contest was called in the bottom half of the sixth inning due to continuous rain effecting the field conditions.
The Blackbirds struck first with two-out hitting in the top of the second inning. Senior
Andrew Smith picked up single through the left side and senior Edward Modica was hit by a pitch to give LIU a pair of runners on base. Sophomore
Colin Adams recorded a RBI single down the left field line for the 1-0 lead.
Bryant took the lead with a three run bottom of the third inning. The Bulldogs recorded a RBI fielder's choice to tie it up at 1-1 before a RBI walk and fielder's choice gave them a 3-1 advantage.
Looking to make something happen in the top half of the sixth as it continued to downpour at Conaty Park, The Blackbirds used a hit by pitch and a pair of walks to load the bases with one out. Smith stepped to the plate and lined a single into right field to cut the deficit to one. Bryant picked up back-to-back strikeouts to evade trouble in the eventual final inning of play.
Smith led the lineup with a pair of hits to go along with a run scored and run batted in. Junior
Jackson Svete dropped the decision on the bump, throwing the first five innings. He surrendered two earned runs on one hit while issuing three walks to a pair of strikeouts.
